Ravens Pee Wee Players Lead BC Selects to 2nd Place in Alberta AAA Champions Cup
The BC Selects competed in this weekend's Alberta AAA Champions Cup in Calgary, which attracted the top 14 AAA female spring hockey teams from Western Canada, and finished in 2nd place. The BC Selects are made up of the top 1999 and 2000 players from throughout BC and Washington State, and include players from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Seattle, Okanagan, and Dawson Creek. The team consists of girls playing female and boys hockey and our Ravens were very well represented. Coached by our Pee Wee AA coaches Tony Lindsay and Tony Wong, the team included five players from our Pee Wee AA Ravens: Nicole White, Lauren Howlett, Nicole Wong, Hannah Shihundu and Kate Reilly. The Selects lost their opening game 1-0 to the Canada West all stars, and then proceeded to win their next four games: 12-0 over the Calgary Wild Pack, 4-1 over the Northern BC all stars, 6-1 over the Northern Saskatchewan all stars and 6-0 over the Calgary Evolution. The 4 win 1 loss record was good for 2nd place in the 14 team tournament. Nicole White and Lauren Howlett finished in the top 15 tournament scorers. "We are very proud of our BC Selects team and very proud of the strength of our Ravens representation," stated Tony Lindsay. "To have 5 members of BC's top Pee Wee spring team come from the Ravens is a great accomplishment. This tournament involved the top female players, whether from boys or female programs, in Western Canada, and our Ravens girls were some of the strongest players at the tournament."
Next up for the BC Selects is the North American Super Elite Classic in Winnipeg in June, where the team will face-off against many of the top North American spring teams.
Congratulations to our Ravens girls for making us all proud!

On Monday night I attended the monthly scheduled meeting of the PCAHA Female Committee of which we belong. I was very pleased to pick up three banners for the Most Sportsmanlike team, this award is determined by the lowest penalty minutes in each tier of each division,. The banners were awarded to;
Midget C1
Peewee AA
Peewee C3
PCAHA apologized for the delay but apparently the banners took some time to arrive. Congratulations to all three Raven teams for setting such a great example for our Association. A motion at the meeting that passed now changes this award, there will only be one banner awarded for each division annually as opposed to each tier in each division, so all our Ravens will need to work hard to win this next year.
Our AGM is coming up quickly, I hope as many parents as possible will try to attend, I am trying to fill one board position and a couple of associate board positions. Please contact me if you have any interest in helping out with our Association, it is very rewarding to be part of this hardworking group. We are still looking for an ice allocator, and three minor associate board positions, media liaison, sponsorship and social (this position is shared by 3- 4 individuals so it is a chance to meet new people or work with a friend). Please call me for any information regarding any of these positions at 604-317-7768.
Hope to see you all on May 7, 2012 at Watermania 6:30 pm., it is a chance to meet with the Board members as a group, to express any comments or concerns and to thank those who are very committed to making the Ravens a leader in Female Hockey Associations.

The Ravens’ hosted the first annual “Season Wrap-up” last weekend. More than 100 players and their parents said farewell to the graduating midget players, cheered on their teammates who were recognized by the coaches and honored several referees without whom the game of hockey couldn’t be played.
Thank you to all those who attended. It was great to hear some of the girls talking about next year’s “Season Wrap-up” already!

41 women were honoured on March 9th at the 19th annual Ethel Tibbits Women Of Distinction Awards held at the Radisson Hotel in Richmond. Ravens Referee-in-Chief Casey Rodusek was one of 4 finalists in the Sports category. The awards celebrate the achievements of the former publisher and editor of the Richmond Review, whose outspokenness and life-long stand on human rights gained her acclaim as a woman of strength and conviction. While the award was presented to another deserving nominee, the Ravens are extremely proud Casey's work as a referee, trainer and volunteer in her community. She embodies the spirit of hard work, fair play and the drive for excellence that are the foundations of the Ravens Association. Congratulations Casey!

Exciting news! At a recent Sunday practice, the Peewee C1 team was visited by Drew MacDonald (Division Manager) who presented the girls with the Team Achievement Banner (Peewee Division, 2011-2012). Drew explained that this banner is awarded to the team & coaching staff who display both good sportsmanship and a positive attitude. Unlike the League and Playoff Banners which are awarded to individual flights, this banner is given to only one team in the entire Peewee division (encompassing both rep and house). In other words, the Peewees were chosen out of 25 teams! Congratulations Peewees!!
The Ravens Midget AA team added the PCAHA Playoff Champions banner to their list of accomplishments this year. This is their 3rd consecutive Playoffs win and their 4th in five years.
Peewee C3 team played exhibition games vs Penticton team at the 60 million dollar South Okanagan Event Center and vs Abbotsford A team at the outside rink at Apex Mountain Ski Hill.

Midget AA, Midget C1 captured League Banner

The Midget AA wins League banner back to back years and its 3rd League banner in the last 4 years. The Midget AA lead league play in goals for and had the best goals against average. Team finished with a record of 12-0-3. The team has its eyes now on a bigger prize.
by Midget AA Head Coach A.J. Sander
The Midget C1's captured the 2011/12 PCAHA League Banner with a jaw-dropping 14-0-1 win-loss-tie record while accruing the fewest PIMS in our division. Just goes to show, a team can win when not in the sinbin. The gumption of their imposing 72 Goals-For was surpassed only by their uncharitable 8 Goals-Against. That's fewer goals-against in a season than da'Leafs concede in a typical game ! Congratulations to Midget C1 Players, Coaches & Parents. by Ellen Penney

When the Richmond Ravens Midget C1 team ventured to Langley over the holidays to participate in the Angels-On-Ice hockey tournament, they did so not to promote peace-on-earth and good-will amongst men, they did so to play fast, play fair and play hard.
After dropping their first game 2-0 to a motivated host team, the black birds vanquished 3 consecutive foes by a combined 10-1 score enroute to the final. In the final, the Ravens attacked with an offense reminiscent of the 80's Oilers, defended with a blue-line that made NORAD look like a chorus-line and exhibited Luongo-like goaltending without the big-league salary and minor-league gaffes. The Raven's collective effort in the final resulted in a 6-1 victory over a very game host squad and had the local beat-writers scrambling for superlatives to chronicle the team's performance.
The C1 front-office would like to thank all players and parents for ensuring the team had all-hands-on-deck for all games (the occasional game-ejection notwithstanding:), an admirable achievement given the location of the tournament and the time of year. Full roster participation was a significant factor in the team's success. 2011 was kind to the flock and with comparable effort and participation in 2012 the Raven's are optimistic that further success, however it be measured, is attainable.

On December 23rd, over 30 players, representing the Richmond Ravens Midget AA team and the Devils Alumni, faced off in the 3rd Annual Alumni hockey game in support of the Richmond Food Bank.
This annual well-attended event matches up new players with former Ravens to keep the family tradition going. The high-scoring game featured numerous penalty shots and a call for a stick measurement, much to everyone’s amusement.
Midget AA Ravens Alisha Wong and Hannah Coates delivered the donated food and cash to a grateful Richmond Food Bank on Christmas Eve. The Food bank helps over 530 local households a week meet basic nutritional needs. The Ravens association actively promotes community participation with the aim of developing its players into the leaders of tomorrow.

The Tyke Jamboree on Sunday, December 4, saw the Ravens association play host to girls from Tri-Cities, Abbotsford, North Shore and Vancouver. In the spirit of togetherness and sportsmanship, there were 8 teams all having girls from different cities playing in a round-robin mini-tournament. The action included games and a Skills Demonstration showing the breadth of Ravens' players age and ability organized by Tony Lindsay. All participants reveled in the camaraderie of female hockey sharing pizza, goodie bags and medals. The Tyke Jamboree was a major success with almost 80 girls from across the lower mainland participating in this terrific event uniquely held by our association.

The Midget AA team froze out the competition in Regina over the weekend, taking the gold medal in the final game vs the Swift Current Titans 3-1. The Sasktel Female Hockey Challenge champions met teams from Saskatchewan and Manitoba in 3 days of round robin play. This is the second time a Ravens Midget AA team has won this competition.
Richmond Ravens Pee Wee AA Team Wins Prestigious Kamloops Tournament
The Richmond Ravens Pee Wee AA team capped an outstanding weekend by capturing the Kamloops Female Pee Wee AA Tournament Championship trophy with a convincing 8-0 win over the Prince George Cougars. Richmond started the tournament slowly, coming off the bus and onto unfamiliar Olympic Size ice, where they lost a heartbreaking opening game 4-3 to the host Kamloops Mystix Blazers. Kamloops scored off a deflection with 34 seconds left to secure the win. It would be the last goal scored against the Ravens in the tournament.
The Ravens rebounded the next day to defeat Tri Cities Predators 7-0, which set up a must win round robin game against the undefeated Cougars. The Ravens came out on top with a 9-0 victory. The Ravens and Cougars tied for first in the Round Robin, setting up a rematch in the final.
“Our girls kept getting stronger as the tournament progressed,” stated Ravens Co-Head Coach Tony Lindsay. “ The games were 60 minutes and we were absolutely relentless. We flat out wore teams out, outscoring the opposition 16-1 in the third periods. I am very proud that it was a complete team effort. All the girls contributed.”
Goaltenders Jenna Ehling and Lauren Dagenais each posted shutouts in the tournament and were supported by a stout defence of Eliane McJunkin, Lauryn Murray, Hannah Green, Kate Reilly and Meg Randall. The line of Nicole White, Lauren Howlett, and Karina Lannard was the highest scoring line in the tournament. Hannah Shihundu, Nicole Wong, and Sidney Parker contributed with timely goals and great forechecking. The line of Sierra Shikaze, Kyra Kuramoto, and Cameron Sihoe was dominant every shift and Elena Lindsay supported well.
The tournament was a great step as the Ravens continue climbing the mountain in preparation for hosting the Provincial Championships in March. They now return to league play, where the Ravens are currently undefeated.

The Ravens are getting into the spirit of the season by helping out the less fortunate in our communities.
Referee-in-Chief Casey Rodusek will be donating a month’s worth of referee earnings to Hockey For The Homeless, a Canada-wide organization that raises funds through hockey tournaments to find solutions for people living on the streets. The Vancouver tournament takes place November 25th at the UBC Thunderbird Arena and will feature former Vancouver Canucks in the team rosters. You can help Casey reach her goal of $1,000 by donating at this web address.
And the Bantam AA team made a surprise visit to the Richmond Auto Mall recently to help paint dealership windows promoting the Richmond Christmas Fund. The Fund has been operating for over 40 years and supports families in need with toys, gifts and grocery vouchers during the holiday season. If you are interested in supporting the Christmas Fund, click here to see the online brochure.
Once again, our Ravens are showing what it takes to be leaders in the community. Way to go girls!
